A Letter From A Maritimer is a place for thoughtful reflection on life in Atlantic Canada, the resilience of small communities, and the challenges of our times. From the quiet beauty of firefly summer nights to the political undercurrents shaping our world, this Substack weaves together the personal and the political, the local and the global.
The inspiration for this newsletter came from a letter I wrote to the “Two Michaels,” Canadians unjustly imprisoned in China, that was later published in The Globe and Mail. In writing it, I realized how vital it is to share our stories and perspectives, especially from this often-overlooked region of Canada. The Maritimes, with its rich history and deep cultural roots, has a unique voice that deserves to be heard.
But A Letter From A Maritimer is not just about celebrating this place, it is also about defending the values of democracy, sovereignty, and truth. In an era where authoritarianism is on the rise and Canada’s political and economic independence is under pressure, this platform serves as a call to reflection and action.
Through essays, historical insights, and analysis, I hope to encourage meaningful discussion on the forces shaping our country and to offer practical ways for Canadians to resist external pressures, maintain economic resilience, and strengthen our national identity.
I am a retired entrepreneur and former tech CEO, with a career spanning leadership in technology commercialization, governance, and international business strategy. As the former Provincial Chair for the Canadian Forces Liaison Council, Director of Atlantic Maple Leaf and former Honorary Colonel of Canada’s oldest cavalry regiment, the 8th Canadian Hussars (Princess Louise’s), I remain a proud advocate for Canada’s military and a strong supporter of national sovereignty.
Throughout my career, I have led national and international initiatives, advised on policy and governance, and built strategic alliances across the public and private sectors. My work has included championing job protections for military reservists, leading national fundraising efforts for military wounded and their families, and mentoring entrepreneurs navigating high-growth ventures.
I also write from the perspective of someone living with a lifelong progressive illness, an experience that has given me a deep appreciation for resilience, not just in individuals, but in communities and nations. My hope is that A Letter From A Maritimer fosters conversations that matter, celebrates the beauty and strength of this region, and contributes to a broader dialogue about the future we want for Canada.
With vivid descriptions that breathe life into the Maritimes. From the majestic tides of the Bay of Fundy to the warmth of local traditions, this Substack is a celebration of everything that makes this often overlooked region so special. Join me on this journey of discovery and connection, where every word paints a picture of the beauty and resilience of life in the Maritimes, while encouraging a deeper understanding of the political and cultural landscape that influences us all.
